[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=”3.19.17″]How Does WCSA Read My Water Meter?<\/strong><\/p>\n WCSA employs\u00a0a radio meter reading system\u00a0that allows us to read your meter as we drive by your home. Many large utilities have transitioned to\u00a0radio meter reading because it provides\u00a0more cost-effective, accurate\u00a0readings, and it makes monthly billing feasible – even for utilities with many customers.<\/p>\n WCSA is among the first water\u00a0utilities in this region to upgrade to radio meter reading technology. Before the new system was installed in 1999, it took six meter readers approximately\u00a0two months to read all 19,000\u00a0WCSA meters, meaning we could only bill our customers\u00a0every other month. Today,\u00a0one meter technician can read all of our meters in only\u00a0six days each month, which allows us to send customers a monthly bill. In addition, whereas manual meter reading cost WCSA $1.09 per meter reading, radio meter reading costs us only $0.13 per meter reading. How Does Radio Meter Reading Work?<\/strong><\/p>\n Your\u00a0water meter\u2019s dial includes a register that records the number of gallons of water\u00a0used. Attached to the\u00a0register is a small transmitter device that\u00a0sends radio signals to our meter readers\u2019 computers. When a WCSA meter reader drives by, the computer in our vehicle sends a \u201cwake-up\u201d signal to the transmitter. The transmitter reads the number of gallons on the meter\u2019s register and relays this data,\u00a0along with your meter’s identification number, to our computer via a digital radio signal. The computer stores this information in its memory.<\/p>\n All of this activity\u00a0takes place\u00a0within milliseconds without requiring the meter reader\u00a0to stop. At the end of the day, the meter readings are uploaded into our computerized billing system, and we send customers\u00a0a bill for\u00a0their\u00a0previous month\u2019s usage.<\/p>\n WCSA\u2019s Auto Read program generates reports of several groups of customers. One report is comprised of customers whose water usage equaled or exceeded\u00a020,000 gallons for\u00a0a\u00a0month. If possible, WCSA will notify these customers\u00a0in the event of a possible\u00a0leak.
