Completed Projects
Two new 280,000-gallon clearwell tanks were recently installed as part of the Town of Chilhowie and WCSA Regional Mill Creek Water Treatment Plant Clearwell Tank Replacement Project. This $1.282 million project was funded by USDA Rural Development and the Mount Rogers Planning District Commission.
The Mendota Road Water Line Extension Project continued the installation of water line infrastructure begun nearly 20 years ago, and provided service to 62 additional residences along a more than eight-mile section of Mendota Road. It also allowed these residences to be served by WCSA’s water system from its Middle Fork Water Treatment Plant.
The Mary’s Chapel/Archery Range Road Water Line Project enabled WCSA to bring water service to homes along Mary’s Chapel Road and a portion of Walker Mountain Road, along with an unserved section of Archery Range Road. Construction included installation of 17,500 linear feet of water line and a water pumping station. Funded by the Virginia Department of Health Office of Drinking Water and WCSA, the project provided new service to 14 homes in the project area and updated service to 50 homes connected to an older line that was experiencing service issues.
Ongoing Projects
The Lee Highway Corridor Sewer Improvements Project is a multi-phase project that will bring much-needed sewer treatment capacity to the west-central portion of Washington County. The project is funded by USDA Rural Development, the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality, Washington County and WCSA, and was designed by Thompson & Litton.
The initial “backbone” project will include four sewer pumping stations, approximately 41,220 linear feet of sewer force main line, 32,221 linear feet of gravity sewer line and 150 sewer manholes. Construction is underway on all four contracts and is expected to be completed in February 2025.
The Smyth Chapel Road Water Distribution Improvements Project will involve updating an existing water pump station, including the installation of approximately 4,500 linear feet of water line to provide better water service to residents along Smyth Chapel Road and Tobias Road, along with updated service for areas around Tree Top Drive in the Emory area. This updated service will also allow fire hydrants to be placed into service along Smyth Chapel Road and Tobias Road. The project is underway and expected to be completed in the fall of 2024.
Upcoming Projects
The Buffalo Pond Water Line Extension Project and the Flatwood Acres Water Line Extension Project will enable WCSA to supply public water to 20 residents. WCSA has received $1,535,162 in grant funding from the Virginia Department of Health for these projects, which are currently in the design process. The projects are expected to be advertised for bids in the fall of 2024.
